A fully featured page designer is available to lay out windows and controls for use within Silverlight programs. The designer goes as far as to display an image of the device around the edge of your page to help visualize its appearance. Silverlight pages can be created and modified by either using the designer or by editing the underlying eXtensible Application Markup Language (XAML, which is generally pronounced zammal ). We will look at XAML and the Silverlight page designer in a great deal more detail later in this book. Visual Studio will display both the designer and the XAML editor as side-by-side panels within the IDE, as shown in Figure 1 2, and any change made to either will be immediately reflected in the corresponding panel. This provides a very flexible mechanism for page design, allowing each panel to work together to perform their actions more efficiently.

JInput is a cross-platform API for the discovery and polling of input devices, ranging from the familiar (keyboard, mouse) to more fun varieties (joysticks, gamepads). The range of supported devices depends on the underlying OS. On Windows, JInput employs DirectInput; on Linux it relies on /dev/input/event* device nodes, and there s a Mac OS X version as well. Posts to the JInput forum at Java Games Forums (http://www.javagaming.org/forums/ index.php board=27.0) suggest that JInput runs well on Windows and Linux but is less fully implemented on OS X. I ve only tested my code on Windows and would welcome comments by readers using other platforms. JInput first appeared in 2003, as part of a collection of open source technologies (JOGL, JOAL, JInput) initiated by the Game Technologies Group at Sun Microsystems. JInput was developed by members of the JSR 134 expert group (a group concerned with Java gaming). I m using the May 2006 Windows version (the most recent as of January 2007), which I downloaded as jinput_windows_20060514.zip from https://jinput.dev.java.net/. It came from the Win32 folder under the Documents & Files menu item. Recent JInput releases differ from the popular version 1.1 from 2004. In particular, the old Axis class has been renamed to Component, and the component Identifier classes have been reorganized and expanded. Unfortunately, this means that older JInput examples, notably those in the excellent tutorial by Robert Schuster at https://freefodder.dev.java.net/tutorial/ jinputTutorialOne.html, won t work without some modifications.

However, at this isolation level, another anomaly is possible: a nonrepeatable read, which is a phenomenon where a transaction may read data from a resource that may not be available, or may be a different value, after a concurrently executing transaction commits. This is also known as an inconsistent read. For instance, let s say transaction A starts and begins a modification on the customers table. Before the transaction commits, transaction B starts and reads a record from the customers table for customer ID 1002. The data returned by this statement may be modified or deleted by statements executing under transaction A. This means that if transaction B relies on the data read from the customers table during its own execution, it may be relying on a read request that could not be repeated once transaction A commits.

Another extremely useful tool is Visual Studio s breakpoint feature. No doubt familiar to any desktop developer, breakpoints are fully supported for Windows Phone development, too, and can be used both when running against the emulator and against a physical device. It can be extremely useful to break into your code, examine your variables, and step through the instructions while watching the results on a real device on the desk next to you.
