Chris Adamson talks about video and audio capture in 6 of his book QuickTime for Java: A Developer s Notebook (O Reilly, 2005). He s somewhat hampered by the fact that QTJ doesn t support an onscreen component for its SequenceGrabber class; SequenceGrabber offers a grabPict() method, but there s no efficient way of getting that image on to the screen (Adamson mentions a 1-frame/second drawing rate). A solution was found by Jochen Broz after the book s publication and posted to the quicktimejava mailing list (http://lists.apple.com/archives/QuickTime-java/2005/Nov/msg00036.html). He bypasses the inefficiencies of grabPict() and generates a BufferedImage directly from the SequenceGrabber frame. Adamson explains the details in a note at http://www.oreillynet.com/ mac/blog/2005/11/capturing_to_the_screen_with_q.html and reports tests showing frame rates of 32 FPS, which is a frame captured every 30 ms or so; that s slower than JMF but still reasonable for many applications.

If you decide that you want to target both platforms, you know now that it is a feasible goal. The primary piece of advice that I can offer is to simply test your game in both environments as often as you can throughout its development. The sooner you try things out, the quicker you can spot problems and correct them before you build too much additional complexity on top of them.

The conversion of a Silverlight project from Windows Phone 7 into the general Silverlight environment is unfortunately not quite as straightforward as it is for XNA. Although a fair bit more effort is required, however, it is still possible to get your project moved across relatively unscathed. Browser-based conversions can provide a great way of demonstrating your game. Because the assembly references and classes used by Silverlight in the browser are a bit different from the phone, it is not really possible to get a single source code base running in both environments. Instead you will need to create a new project and import the functionality in from the original source files, modifying them as you go for the new environment. Notice that the codes produced by the Huffman tree do not prefix each other; that is, no entire code is the beginning of another code.
